ts not so much the campsite – although we think the facilities are pretty good. No, it’s simply that Newgale is the sort of place you fall in love with.
To some people it’s just a fantastic place to relax, to get away from it all. To others it’s an adventure playground of sand and sea. To many families it’s an inexpensive place to take the children on holiday – and the children certainly seem to have a great time.
From the campsite, you just cross the road then the pebble bank, and there it is – a mile long beach for building sandcastles, playing games, flying kites or just lying there. The sea is popular for surfing, canoes or swimming, and there’s often a lifeguard on duty in August.
There is a coastal bus service, but you’re best off with a car so you can pick up supplies in the local shop, a mile and a half away, or visit other places of interest.
If you like walking, you can take the Coastal Path north to Solva or south to Nolton Haven. The round trip to either village can be done easily in a day, including a break for lunch when you get there. In fact there are plenty of good eating places within a few miles of Newgale.
As you look out to sea from Newgale, you can see various islands including the nature reserves Skomer and Ramsey. Many different boat trips are available from different villages, including to Skomer from Martin’s Haven or to Ramsey from St Davids.
You may like to know what you can find in Newgale – other than the campsite and the beach!
The Duke of Edinburgh Inn is next to the campsite. It’s a well run family business providing meals and drink, and is child friendly.
Next door to The Duke is NewSurf where you can find all the kit you need for surfing and kayaking. You can also hire wetsuits and buy snacks.
A few hundred yards along from Newsurf you’ll find the Sands Cafe. It’s open nearly every day of the year for breakfasts, lunch and tea (limited hours off-season). It’s closed in the evening.
